Black Histories: Celebrating community-led education and arts
Tuesday 25th October, 6:30 - 9:00pm
Hanley Crouch Community Association, 42 Crouch Hill, N4 4BY

Come join us as we honour Black Histories by celebrating the role of community, intergenerational knowledge and arts as critical pedagogy.

What and how we learn about history affects us in tangible ways. Community-led initiatives and intergenerational ties are often central to challenging the erasure and reduction of Black histories - of wholeness, multiplicities and nuances, of resistances, and of celebration.

Learning history is not limited to a classroom, textbook, or museum. Black community-led initiatives that centre intergenerational knowledge are challenging notions of authority and power around history narrating. Community focused artistic approaches not only explore what we are learning but how, through what relationships, conversations, and practices.

This is a community focused event creating space to celebrate! There will be guest speakers, performances and food (more details to be announced very soon). We especially welcome young people, elders, families, educators and local residents.

For the 100th anniversary of the ending of World War 1 we present a comprehensive overview of the African/Caribbean presence, contribution and importance in the 1914-1918 war. Despite being on the British school curriculum most people have no idea that Black people played any part in either World War 1 or World War 2. This interactive seminar will give an explanation of the crucial role Africa, Asia and the Caribbean played in WW1. Interviews with Jamaican WW1 veterans, the West India Regiment in Palestine, Black and Asian fighter pilots, the Herero genocide, German colonies in Africa and how that affected world geography and WW2 and more.

Past Events
We host a range of cultural events in Islington that share vital perspectives and ideas, which are typically unheard or underrepresented in the mainstream. From 2010 - 2015 we delivered Islington's official Black History Month Festival, an incredibly popular programme of film screenings and community events, which were attended by thousands of people (see below).

Since launching our All World History All Year Round campaign in 2015, we've been working to offer a year-round events programme of diverse and thought provoking art, history, literature, music and food, connecting people from all backgrounds, across London. The programme is inspired by the radicalism and positivity of our BHM festivals. Examples of these events include a screening of the political documentary The Supreme Price, at King's Place; a book launch with award-winning author Anjan Sundaram at Housman's Bookshop and summer party of poetry, music and discussion with award-winning poet and political commentator Anthony Anaxagorou at the amazing Global Generation's Skip Garden in King's Cross. We are currently fundraising to continue to offer these important cultural events in Islington.
