Our Histories

PictureNewington Green Primary win the Young History Filmmakers Award exploring Caribbean experiences in the UK, in partnership with Every Voice, Chichester University and Black Cultural Archives, 2017.
Decolonising history education in primary and secondary schools

Our Histories is a network and education project supporting interested schools to shift from a Euro-centric view of history, and establish a more critical lens through which we understand our histories. We provide teachers and schools with opportunities, networking and resources to develop and share history-making approaches that highlight diversity in narratives, amplifying the stories and perspectives of people of colour, to present a wider and more rigorous view of history where all young people can see themselves in the history they study.
We are currently working in Islington schools across KS2-KS3, and connect schools with specialist partners and peers through a Teacher CPD network and a programme of in-school class workshops that support the widening of teaching approaches and curriculum development.

History of our work in Islington
Through Every Voice's campaign work advocating for the development of anti-racist practice in history education and an all year round approach, Islington Council passed a motion in 2015 stating that black history be fully integrated in to the school history curriculum instead of just being celebrated in Black History Month, and warned that progress in promoting black history, culture and heritage would be severely limited unless a spectrum of narratives are embedded in the school curriculum all year round. We are proud partners of Islington Council and schools in the borough.  Since 2015 we have worked with many schools and teachers across Islington, engaging hundreds of pupils and students and have partnered with a wide range of educational organisations and practitioners to co-develop this work.

Throughout the year we are sharing resources and providing teacher support for those who are keen to expand the curriculum by:
  • teaching a wider range of histories
  • exploring more critical approaches to pedagogy
  • exploring how teaching histories relates to anti-racist practice

We will be facilitating a peer-learning/training environment with opportunities for feedback and reflection.

Outline of sessions:
1: Introduction: an opportunity for teachers to come together and share their experiences of teaching more inclusive histories. We will reflect on what works well, what barriers/challenges exist and what support is needed. This will also be a chance to get to know Every Voice, our work around the history curriculum and what support we can offer in the upcoming sessions.

2. Resources (part 1): we will be exploring resources available that can support expanding the histories we teach at KS2. There will be a guest speaker related to one of the resources who can provide more in-depth understanding.

3. Teaching approaches: we will discuss the need for more critical and diverse approaches to pedagogy when teaching history. This will include reflecting on anti-racist practice and how it relates to teaching histories in schools.

4. Resources (part 2): we will be exploring resources available that can support expanding the histories we teach at KS2. There will be a guest speaker related to one of the resources who can provide more in-depth understanding.

History Workshops (KS2 and KS3)

Every Voice are excited to be offering in-school history workshops exploring a diverse range of histories and inclusive approaches. They will be delivered by selected specialist history education partners, providing an opportunity to deliver new material with the outcome of supporting future curriculum development.

To request workshops, please email: aishah.w@everyvoice.org.uk.

Please note, there is a small fee for all workshops.

The programme of workshops include:

History making: this workshop will explore the relationship between personal storytelling and history-making. We will have a chance to create a map of the various histories in the room through creative approaches.

Students will explore questions: What is history? Who writes history? What and whose histories are we learning? What history can I learn through my family and/or community stories? The workshop aims to equip students with critical-thinking and history-making tools.

Local history: this workshop will be an opportunity for students to explore local histories in Islington (or your local area). Students will explore questions: What is history? What and whose histories are we learning? How can I learn history from my local area? How does my local history connect to wider histories across the world? The workshop aims to equip students with critical-thinking and history-making tools.

Histories across the world: with specialist partners, we can offer workshops focused on a particular historical moment and enquiry. This will be an opportunity for students to engage with a particular part of history that is not usually included in the mainstream history curriculum.

The aim of the workshop will be to shift from a Eurocentric approach, enhance critical thinking, expand awareness of historical moments across the world and their relevance today, and to increase self-esteem of students who do not usually see their histories represented in a positive way.

Tailored curriculum support: we can offer schools a tailored workshop or advice for a particular aspect of the curriculum upon request from a school.
